Stop-Motion Character Animation

I  first planed to make toys to move like become alive. I also thought about some story behind . I decided to set my scene and picked my favorite toys. Then I used  a board to set my background. I also set up my camera and tripod outside my house, and I shot the images in front view about 170 frames. Then I used Fcheck to combine the images and exported as a movie. Finally I used After Effect cs6  to put some sound and exported  as movie again.

HW 8 The Laws of Physics in an Animation Universe First term paper

Kung Fu Hustle's unrealistic Physics

Kung Fu Hustle is a Hong Kong action comedy film released in 2004. The film was directed and produced by Stephen Chow who is also a popular Hong Kong movie star. He is one of my favorite Hong Kong movie stars at all time. Kung Fu Hustle is humorous, special-effects-filled, and action-packed martial arts. The scene is set in early China around 1930.The actions in the film disregard physic realism and sometime they are too exaggerated. It makes this comedy film much more interesting. There are full of physics controversies in the film and I will compare the physic laws of Kung fu Hustle animation to common physics laws in reality. Kung Fu Hustle law of gravity, Kung fu Hustle Action- Reaction exaggerate and Kung fu Hustle Uneven Action Reaction will be discussed in details.

The first unreal physic law that I found in the film is the law of gravity among characters. The characters jump and stay in the air so long, and we can obviously see in the most old generation of Chinese Kung fu movies. Comparing to the real world, it doesn't exist.  As we know, gravity is a natural phenomenon by which physical bodies attract each other with a force proportional to their masses. Gravitation is most familiar that gives weight to objects with mass and causes them to fall to the ground when dropped. On the chasing scene, the landlord lady is chasing Stephen Chow while she is running in the air for a long time. People commonly can jump and run in the air for not more than two or three seconds. Another similar example is when the landlord lady encounters one of the axe gang members and her run away. She runs like cartoon character with running in the air. When I see booths scene, it reminds me to think of one of the Chuck Jones Animations, “The Beep Beep". The way road runner running in the air and the landlord lady running are the same post and action.

Another example of a lack of gravity among the characters is the scene where the landlord is fighting with a pair of skilled assassins. The landlord jumps backward and floats in the air like no weight. It looks like he is jumping in space without gravity. The action is the same as the fighting scene between assassins and one of the martial artists. He flies in the air and move forward like five second.
During the fight between the assassins and the three martial artists, the assassins are playing Chinese instrument and sitting with one leg to support their weight. The post is like they sitting on chairs, but they actually are sitting in the air. During the posing moment, they sit very stable with one leg in the air that disregard to the laws of the center of gravity. In reality, nobody can sit in the air. Their base of support is in the pelvis in the back. In order to support this post, the center of gravity point should move forward more. It is impossible to do this kind of post because it will fall down.
Action reaction being effect exaggerate is very common in the comedy film. Exaggerated action reaction always breaks the physic law. For example, In the chasing scene of landlord's wife, she jumps about three stories high and flies over a truck without exploding action. This is impossible for human to jump that high. Only Kung Fu master in the movie can do because they can float and fight without any supporting reaction force. It looks like she just jump about thirty feet away from the truck. It is impossible for her to jump that high without any push force to the ground. Sometime the character push force in the ground, but the reaction is too exaggerated. For example, the scene that Stephen Chow is fighting with the beast shows the action reaction exaggerates. When the Beast is using toad Kung Fu technique, he flies straight and beat up Stephen Chow. The beast action is too exaggerated because he does not push enough force on the ground in order to fly more than two hundred feet and hit Stephen Chow. The action is the same    when the beast jumps backward and leaps away very high. He jumps over four story building and he pushes less force on the ground. That is impossible for human to do that. Another example of action exaggerate is the crushing feet scene. When Stephen Chow is fighting with the beast, he hardly steps on the beast's feet. After the attack, his feet looks totally flat and look like a paddle. The action is too exaggerated because both of their weights look similar. In order to do that, Stephen Chow must have weight like a thousand pounds.
Another example of action exaggerate among the character is the scene that Stephen Chow fighting with fifty people. It shows unrealistic action and reaction force. For example, while Stephen chow is beating with fifty people, he kicks them away about one hundred feet from the standing point.  Stephen chow exerts a hit with huge force and is able to hold standing position on the ground without receiving reaction force.  In reality, no one can exert a kick that sends a person flying one hundred feet away. If it possible to happen, Stephen chow would receive an equal magnitude in an opposite direction. It means he would have a recoil reaction of bouncing backwards. Another example of action exaggerate is the fighting between the landlord and the assassins scene. The landlord holds their hands and swings them like a circle and throw them like two hundred feet away. The action is impossible to do because the landlord's weight is less than their weight. The landlord weight is about not more than two hundred pound and there is no way he can hold two people weights and swing them easily.
Another example of action reaction exaggerate is the scene that Stephen Chow got beat by beast and flies in the air.  He steps on the eagle and makes another jump. His weight is about one hundred fifty pound and the eagle weight is not more than one hundred pound. When he steps on the eagle in the air, he should fall down with the eagle. He has more weight than eagle. The eagle needs more weight in order to bounce backward on his second jump. Another example with action exaggerate is the scene that the beast catch a bullet with two fingers and no reaction respond. Human can't respond that fast and no one else does. After he catches the bullet, his fingers do not have reaction or bouncing backward. It is like he is holding a marshmallow.
The Action-Reaction law states that "For every action force there is an equal reaction force in the opposite direction." It seem that the Kung Fu hustle totally ignore the law of physic .In the landlord and the beast fighting scene, the landlord's wife hit the beast with a stick. After hit the beast, the stick is broken but the beast got no reaction respond and not even moves his body. It is like you hit a stone. In the realty, the beast would be bouncing backward because the force is big.
Another of action reaction is when Stephen chow kicks people into the air, and they fall down hit the ground. There is not enough reaction when they land on the ground. Because people got send in the over five stories high, they should not be survive. When they fall and hit the ground, there is no bouncing back and they should not be alive. No one can survive that kind of fall in the real world. Another similar scene is when the landlord lady found out that her husband is fooling around with the other ladies. The landlord wife beats him up until he falls down from the window. When he contacts the ground from five stories high, there is no reaction and he is still alive.

One more example on uneven the action- reaction is when the couple fighting with the beast. The landlord is kicking the beast with two legs while his wife is punching the beast belly. There is some reaction on the beast body but there is no bouncing backward from the reaction. The force doesn’t match because the beast body doesn't even move. It just holds the same position. Only a little bit reaction on face and belly happen. In reality, the reaction on the beast should be equal with the force.
In conclusion, the whole movie is full of unrealism actions that break the law of physics.  Kung fu hustle is a live-action comedy film that disregards physics realism. It also produces an extremely comical movie and the special effect of this movie is focused on humor than realism. In the Kung fu hustle world, the Kung fu hustle Law of Gravity, Law of action-reaction exaggerate, and Law of uneven action reaction are all fake. This unreal physics on the actions make this movie much more interesting and entertain. Even though most of the actions are not realistic, I really enjoy watching this film very much.

Stop Motion Animation of Falling

First, I planed to make a ball boucing animation by using a bottle cap that represents a ball. Then I used a black paper as a background. I also set up my camera and tripod on the table, and I shot the images in a head shot about 30 frames. Finally I used a Fcheck to combine the images and exported as a movie.

Mini-Portfolio

Apes or primates are the most beautiful creatures on earth. When I was in high school in Thailand, i studied anthropology and wanted to be anthropologist one day. Even though I'm in Animation and Illustration major, I still love to study anthropology. I also love animation and illustration and painting is my hobby.  Down here are some of my art works that i did for the classes.
